City comparison
Cities Where Frost-Free Days Are Misleading
Frost-free days measure how much calendar room a garden has between spring and fall frost. Growing degree days measure how much usable warmth builds up inside that window. This ranking highlights cities where those two signals point in different directions.
Why frost-free days can mislead gardeners
A long frost-free season can still be cool if summer heat builds slowly. A shorter season can still grow warm-season crops surprisingly well if heat accumulates quickly once frost risk passes. GrowByDate uses both signals because time and heat are not the same thing.
This page is the broad diagnostic view. For the two sides of the pattern, compare Long Growing Seasons With Low Growing Degree Days and Short Growing Seasons With Surprisingly High Heat.
The ranking
Cities are ranked by the size of the gap between their frost-free-days percentile and base 50°F GDD percentile. Bigger gaps mean the calendar season and heat budget disagree more strongly.

Sources and methodology
Official source context for this ranking
This ranking is a GrowByDate interpretation of frost-date, seasonal heat, and crop-margin signals. These links show the official source concepts behind the derived metrics.
- NOAA/NCEI U.S. Climate Normals — U.S. climate-normal context for frost/freeze probabilities, season length, and growing degree day statistics.
- Environment and Climate Change Canada Climate Normals — Canadian climate-normal context for frost-free period, frost probabilities, and degree-day elements.
- NOAA Climate Prediction Center degree day resources — degree-day terminology and reference material.
- GrowByDate data methodology — how source references are turned into garden-planning signals.
These links support the reference concepts behind the page. GrowByDate values are planning averages, not live forecasts or guarantees for a specific garden bed.
Methodology
Cities are compared by the gap between their frost-free-days percentile and base 50°F GDD percentile within the GrowByDate reference city dataset. Larger gaps mean the calendar season and heat budget point in different directions.
This ranking is a diagnostic signal, not a crop guarantee. Local microclimates, water, wind, soil warmth, variety choice, and year-to-year weather can change real garden outcomes.
